Week 1: Introduction to the Course

Welcome to English 91! You should check our class website every Monday and Wednesday before our Tuesday and Thursday classes so that you can come to class prepared. While I have sketched an outline for the class in these weekly session posts, things will undoubtedly change as the semester goes on.

This week we have three principle goals. First, I want for us to get acquainted. Second, I want us to think about how to succeed in college and what skills and commitments are necessary to learning. It is for this reason that are early readings in this class will be centered on the science of learning and the present state of education in the United States.

Thirdly, we will be working on improving our reading skills. We will cover this in class, but in case you forget these strategies or misplace the handout I gave you, you can always find it here on our course website.

This week you will have two tasks to take care of: 1) Buy/rent your books from the bookstore. You will need them sooner rather than later and having these books is key to doing well in the class; 2) Read the assigned readings, make sure to do the assigned reading journals, and fill out the schedule handout I gave you on the first day.

As with all of these weekly entries, I have listed the homework due below. All homework and reading is due at the beginning of the class that it is listed. The readings can be found on our website under the "Course Information & Documents" Header where it says Course Reading Packet.

Wednesday:
Read:
Carol S. Dweck, "Brainology: Transforming Students' Motivation to Learn"
Paul Tough, "What if the Secret to Success is Failure"
Note: You must print out these readings and bring them to class. I am also requiring you to print the entire packet for the semester and placing it in a three ring binder. I will give you 10 points of HW credit for doing so.
Due:
Time Management Worksheet
Note: The double entry reflection must be typed and should take into account both the Dweck and Tough readings. The Time Management Worksheet is the only assignment that can be in pen or pencil since the information you put down is likely to shift throughout the term.
