Week 7: Midterm & Outliers

On Monday, you will have the full 80 minutes (60 to write, 20 to revise) to take your midterm. In that time you must produce three full handwritten pages. The midterm will be open book and open note. You may bring to the midterm a  copy of the reading as well as a page of notes (1 sided). You may also bring a dictionary. You will need a blue book, a blue/black pen, and a red pen/pencil to take the exam. No electronic devices will be allowed during the exam.

To prepare for this in-class essay, you will need to reread and annotate the text many times. Preparation before the day of the in-class will have a direct effect upon the success of your essay. You should try to develop a thorough comprehension of the text’s claims and assumptions.

On Wednesday, we will complete our discussion of Outliers, reading the chapter on Joe Flom (pictured above). This is an important chapter for Gladwell as Flom helps explain what makes people successful: a combination of opportunity, cultural legacies, and personal effort. As you through the chapter on Flom, I want you to consider a) how Flom's story differs so wildly from Chris Lanagan's story and b) how this combination of opportunity, cultural legacy, and personal effort helped to propel Flom and his contemporaries.

Malcolm Gladwell, Outliers, 116-58
Due: Study Questions below

1. Why does Flom's story differ so wildly from Chris Lanagan's? How could you apply the lesson of Flom's story to your own life?

2. Joe Flom's life story is in many ways an illustration of Gladwell's ideas about how one becomes an outlier. According to the previous chapters, how does one become an outlier? How does Flom's life illustrate these principles?
